Tips for Optimizing AC Efficiency
As the summer sun scorches the Coachella Valley, you're relying on your AC unit to keep your home comfortable. But if your AC is working inefficiently, you may not be able to keep sufficiently cool, and your energy bills could climb higher and higher. Fortunately, there are a number of measures you can take that will help to maximize your AC's efficiency. You can also call in for semi-annual HVAC maintenance, during which the technician will make sure that everything is working just like it should. At PB Mechanical, our local HVAC company provides expertise with AC repair and maintenance. If you suspect that your AC is working inefficiently, give us a call and we'll quickly take care of the problem.
Ways to Maximize AC Efficiency
You'll want to set your programmable thermostat so that your AC is only running when you need it and is keeping you at a temperature that is reasonably cool, rather than cold. It's worth keeping in mind that it's not helpful to set your thermostat at a lower temperature than you need in hope that the room will cool faster. All this will do is make your AC run longer. Once you find the right spot with your thermostat, just leave it right there. If you regularly fiddle with the settings, you may end up with recurrent on/off cycles, which could reduce comfort and system efficiency.
You'll also want to seal up any areas that are allowing air to pass into/out of your home. Areas to check include windows, attics, and around doors. When air is leaking, it becomes more challenging for your AC to cool down your home efficiently. And while you're operating your AC, windows and doors should remain closed. It can also be helpful to close curtains over windows. Some homeowners use blackout shades to reduce solar heat gain through windows, which makes it easier for the AC to work efficiently.
It's also beneficial to shade your outdoor condenser. However, it's important that all plant growth remains at least two feet away from it. When cool air is flowing freely around your condenser, your AC system's efficiency can meaningfully improve.
